Sunday Question: What is your missing piece?

With everything in your collection, there has to be something you're missing. Is there a card or piece of memorabilia that every time you see, you have to have it?

If there an item that keeps slipping through your grips?

I'm not really sure I have something that I need that way. My Derek Jeter collection feels fairly complete when it comes to the cards that are out there.

I have an auto, patch and plenty of game-used jerseys. I also a signed baseball and all his rookie cards.

I'm feeling good with my collection, but what are you missing?

  1. My missing item hasn't slipped through my grips, instead it is beyond my budget: Topps 1954 Ernie Banks rookie card. Someday, though...it will be mine!

  2. A couple of years ago there were a few Ron Santo multi-color patch cards that I got outbid on every time. I haven't seen one in ages.

  3. As an Oriole fan I can't believe I haven't picked up the '82 Ripken rookie card yet. Alas, it isn't getting any cheaper....

  4. For 15 years I've been looking for the '94 Score Rookie/Traded Alex Rodriguez Call-Up card. I've seen the redemption card once, but have never seen the actual A-Rod card.

  5. Steve Carlton Rookie! He was my original favorite player... When my Mom took me to card shows as a little kid, I ran to the tables that had it. I swore I would save till I got it. I have put deposits on one before, but it has never worked out. I've given up on collecting vintage cards for the most part, but that 65 Steve Carlton is my White Whale... For current cards, the 99 Carl Crawford auto. Paul from Carl Crawford Cards mentioned it in a post the other day. I've bid on it, tried to trade for it, but I just can't get it...

  6. A Fisk rookie is my all-time missing piece.

Recently, it's any White Sox related 2009 A&G rip card. Ripped or not!

  7. My missing piece is the 2001 Bowman Chrome Pujols AU RC. While I would love to have it, I would have to hit the lotto be own it. I've accepted that will never happen, on both accounts.

I'm happy with my collection, a couple of RC's and a sweet triple relic auto.

By the way, this question might help some people to trade with others for what they are missing, unless it's just beyond the realm of possibilities, i.e. Pujols auto rc.

  10. a pristine signed baseball from EVERY Yankee team. My goal in collecting right now is to collect the autograph of every living Yankee so with each new member of the team there is a new guy I need. I know I won't succeed but the thrill of the hunt is worth the effort.

  12. I haven't seen one in a long time, but my White Whale is a 1999 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor of Pat Burrell. One of these days...

  13. For me, it would be something Babe Ruth (jersey, bat chip, or even auto).

One of these days I"ll quit being cheap and get one, considering I"m a collector who doesn't really spend over $20 for a card (and I'll have to break that rule for a Ruth something).

  14. I've always wanted a nice Rickey Henderson rookie. He has always been one of my favorite players on one of my favorite teams (A's). However, there is a card that I'd rather have right this second. It's a J.J. Hickson autograph from 08/09 Topps Signature basketball. It's the last card I need for my set.

  15. I've recently picked up my Walter Payton RC and now on to my Michael Jordan RC. Has to be '86 Fleer. Hard to imagine that my uncle sold numerous sets of that year for $30 each at the card shows. That of course was even before the basketball beckett was out and no one really cared about basketball. The other would have to be the Lew Alcindor RC.

  16. Missing pieces past and present:

1963 Pete Rose rookie. I'm no activist looking for a convicted illegal gambler to earn redemption through "enshrinement", but that is an iconic hobby card that's eluded me for years.

1967 Tom Seaver rookie. My favorite player of all time, I and still don't have a rookie card over three decades of active collecting.

2008 UD Documentary Seasonal Signatures Griffey and Jeter. According the the UD checklist, these sticker auto cards exist, but I have never seen one, and as far as I know, eBay has never seen one either. A nice subset within a most-reviled set of 2008.

Recent missing piece filled! 1959 Roy Campanella "Symbol of Courage" card. I'd always admired it, physically and conceptually, since I was a kid. Finally picked up a decent one for a reasonable price on the Bay earlier this year.

  17. I'd like to have a 93 Finest Frank Thomas Refractor. I's also like a certified on card auto too.
